The Michigan Panthers didn’t play perfect football Saturday in Arlington—but they played together. And when it mattered most, they played tough.
Despite fumbles, blown coverages, and some shaky special teams moments, the Panthers found a way to claw past the Arlington Renegades 25–24 at Choctaw Stadium. The win moves Michigan to 5–2 and keeps them in the driver’s seat in the USFL Conference.

It was Toa Taua who put the exclamation point on a chaotic game. With one second left and the Panthers trailing by five, the California native powered through a pile and into the end zone from one yard out. It wasn’t flashy. It wasn’t easy. But it was Michigan football.
Taua’s final stat line—10 carries for 31 yards and the game-winning score, plus 2 catches for 36 yards—doesn’t jump off the page, but it also doesn’t tell the whole story. The Panthers’ offensive line earned this one too.
Even as Bryce Perkins was under fire most of the day, the O-line battled. They pushed the pile in tight spaces, kept Taua on his feet, and created just enough daylight for the backfield to stay dangerous. Taua, for his part, was as surefooted as they come—always falling forward, always staying in phase. His vision and ability to finish runs made the difference.
Perkins Does it All (Sometimes Too Much)
Bryce Perkins continues to be the engine for this team. He finished 15-of-28 for 231 yards, added 8 carries for 60 yards and a rushing TD, and accounted for two total touchdowns. The highlight reel will show a confident QB extending plays and commanding late-game drives. His 23-yard rushing touchdown was all effort—breaking containment and diving into the end zone. His focus on the final drive set the stage for Taua’s winner.
NICE, BRYCE! 😤

But with all that brilliance comes some danger. Perkins lost a fumble on the goal line in the third quarter and had another slip out earlier in the game. His tendency to play “hero ball” adds electricity—but also vulnerability. Even his touchdown run almost ended in disaster as he nearly fumbled the ball away while crossing the goal line. He’s the reason Michigan stayed in the game, but he also nearly gave it away. Finding balance in that play style will be key down the stretch. In Perkins we trust.
Receiving by Committee
This passing game remains one of the most unpredictable league. Siaosi Mariner led all Panthers receivers with 5 catches for 86 yards, including a 38-yard strike down the sideline. Malik Turner followed with 4 grabs for 49 yards, including his touchdown and 3-point conversion that brought the Panthers back within striking distance.
Turner’s consistency can’t be overstated, he’s become Perkins’ most reliable target on critical downs despite what looked like a pair of drops . Gunnar Oakes added two catches for 29 yards, and Jaylon Moore quietly chipped in a pair of first downs.
While the ball distribution shows depth, there were still moments where spacing or timing was off, particularly when pressure got to Perkins. But when it counted, the group made plays—especially on the final drive.
Defense Flashes… Then Cracks
For three quarters, the defense bent. In the fourth, it nearly broke.
Luis Perez torched Michigan’s secondary to the tune of 25-of-34 passing for 314 yards and 2 TDs. The Panthers got pressure early, Kenny Willekes landed a sack and 3 TFLs, but as the game wore on, Perez found his rhythm.

Tyler Vaughns was the main problem, hauling in 9 catches for 127 yards and a touchdown. And when the Panthers rotated coverage, tight end Sal Cannella made them pay. He beat Arnold Tarpley clean on a sideline route and later slipped through flat coverage for a walk-in touchdown after a busted assignment.
Good luck catching Sal Cannella

Despite the chunk plays, the front seven did just enough. Stone and Tafua each notched a sack while the Carters and Bell helped limit the run game. Frank Ginda was everywhere again with 8 tackles. Keni-H Lovely batted down two passes and had 5 tackles along with DJ Miller. Tarpley, and Whitehead pitched in, but the communication on the back end needs to be tightened up. If not for the offense bailing them out late, we might be talking about another letdown
Mistakes and Misfires: Pure Michigan
The third quarter turned into a minefield for the Panthers—and nearly cost them the game.
It started right after Arlington ended Michigan’s lead with a field goal. On the ensuing kickoff, Samson Nacua fumbled the return. Arlington jumped on the loose ball that shot out like a rocket and suddenly had a short field to work with. The Panthers’ defense held, but the damage was done—another Havrisik field goal put Arlington up 12-9.
Michigan tried to respond, putting together a strong drive that marched them deep into Renegades territory. But once inside the 10, disaster struck again. On first-and-goal on the 4, Bryce Perkins and Toa Taua botched the now routine exchange. The ball hit the turf, and Arlington’s Willie Taylor III pounced on it.
This time, the Renegades didn’t settle. Perez led a quick-strike drive that ended in a touchdown, and just like that, Michigan went from controlling the pace to trailing 18–9 in a matter of minutes.
That sequence—a kickoff fumble, a botched red zone snap, and a 12-point swing—completely flipped the momentum. And it nearly flipped the result.
Final Thoughts
The Panthers didn’t dominate this week. They didn’t play clean football. But they found a way to leave on top.
This win was a showcase of grit in the trenches, resilience under pressure, and a team that refused to fold when things got messy. The offensive line kept pushing despite constant pressure, Toa Taua delivered in the biggest moment, and Bryce Perkins—flawed but fearless—continued to show why he is an MVP frontrunner.
WINNER!!!!!!!!! OMG!!!!!!

The defense gave up chunk plays and had breakdowns in the secondary, but they held in big red zone moments and kept the game within reach. And when Michigan needed one last drive, they put it together with purpose.
There’s still plenty to clean up. The ball security issues and special teams hiccups can’t keep showing up. But at 5–2, with back-to-back wins, the Panthers head into a USFL Conference gauntlet.
They survived the mess. Now it’s time to build off it and keep climbing.
