The San Antonio Brahmas are charging into the 2025 United Football League (UFL) season with high hopes and a roster built to compete. After a disappointing loss to the Birmingham Stallions in the UFL championship game, the Brahmas are hungry for revenge and determined to establish themselves as a dominant force in the league. With a mix of returning stars, promising rookies, and a dedicated coaching staff, the stage is set for a thrilling campaign.
Key Matchups to Circle:
The 2025 UFL schedule will test the Brahmas’ mettle. Here are a few key matchups Brahmas fans should mark on their calendars:
- Home Opener vs. Houston Roughnecks (April 27th): After four straight road games to start the season, the Brahmas finally return home in Week 5 to face their in-state rivals, the Houston Roughnecks. While the Brahmas narrowly defeated the Roughnecks in Houston last year, despite their struggles, this homecoming game will be crucial for building momentum.
- Clash of the Titans vs. Birmingham Stallions (May 4th): The Brahmas will seek revenge against the Stallions in a rematch of last year’s championship game, where Birmingham delivered a decisive defeat. This game will be a crucial measuring stick for the Brahmas, providing insight into how they stack up against the league’s best and playing a key role in determining playoff positioning.
- Texas Two-Step vs. Arlington Renegades (March 29th & June 1st): These two games against in-state rivals, the Arlington Renegades, are among the most anticipated of the season. Fueled by intense competition, both fan bases will travel in force. Interestingly, the Brahmas will open and close their season against the Renegades. Having swept Arlington last season and won three straight against them, San Antonio aims to continue their dominance.
Offensive Firepower:
The Brahmas’ offense has the potential to be explosive in 2025. With San Antonio native Kellen Mond as the presumptive starting quarterback, the team boasts a dynamic playmaker. He’ll be surrounded by a talented group of receivers, including Jontre Kirkland, known for his speed, hands, and route running. John Lovett, who led the team in rushing last year, will anchor the running game. With Offensive Coordinator AJ Smith returning for his second year, the offensive continuity will be invaluable. Expect innovative offensive schemes designed to maximize the team’s talent.
Defensive Prowess:
A strong defense is essential for any championship team, and the Brahmas are committed to that principle. Under the guidance of defensive mastermind Coach Wade Phillips, the Brahmas defense lived up to high expectations last year. With a mix of returning stars and exciting new signings, the defense will be a force to be reckoned with. A fearsome pass rush and a secondary filled with playmakers will make life difficult for opposing offenses. The Brahmas’ defense will be aggressive and relentless.
Coaching Staff:
The Brahmas are led by a dedicated and experienced coaching staff. Head Coach Wade Phillips’ leadership and expertise will be instrumental in shaping the team’s identity and implementing a winning strategy. AJ Smith’s innovative play-calling will keep opposing defenses guessing. With the entire coaching staff returning, the continuity is extremely valuable, especially in spring football.
Fan Engagement:
While fan attendance was down from their inaugural season in 2023 (as part of the XFL), the San Antonio Brahmas still have a dedicated fan base. The “Bulls on Parade,” a group of diehard fans, travel to every road game. When fully engaged, the fans make the Alamodome an intimidating environment. Pre-game tailgates are a popular tradition. Despite having only four home games this season (due to scheduling conflicts at the Alamodome) and a late home opener, fans eagerly await the season’s start. The passionate support of the Brahmas faithful will be a driving force.
Looking Ahead:
The 2025 UFL season promises to be an exciting chapter in the San Antonio Brahmas’ history. With a talented roster, a returning coaching staff, and a passionate fan base, the team has all the ingredients for a successful campaign. The Brahmas are ready to make their mark on the UFL and return to the championship game, this time aiming for a different outcome.
