NFL Power Rankings: Week 9

NFL Power Rankings: Week 9

Week 8 delivered plenty of drama, including a major comeback by Denver, a statement win by Chicago in Seattle, and one of the most unusual victories you’ll ever see from Tampa Bay. Several contenders strengthened their positions, while others suffered costly losses that have shaken up the rankings. With the season approaching its halfway point, the pressure is starting to build. Here are my Week 9 NFL Power Rankings.

#1 San Francisco 49ers (0)

The 49ers are coming off their bye week at the perfect time. Not only do they hold a 6-1 record, but they also had valuable time to get some key players healthy. Facing a struggling Las Vegas team on the road offers a favorable matchup for San Francisco. The Niners have been one of the most impressive teams in football through the first seven weeks, and I expect them to come out strong following the bye.

#2 Buffalo Bills (0)

The Bills dominated the Ravens on Sunday after both Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley were forced out of the game with injuries. Josh Allen had another outstanding performance, throwing for 289 yards and two touchdowns while adding a rushing touchdown. Buffalo’s defense held Baltimore to just 144 total net yards in an impressive all-around performance. Next up is a fellow 6-1 team, the Minnesota Vikings, in a Monday Night Football matchup.

#3 Denver Broncos (+2)

The Broncos did what they do best: win in comeback fashion. Denver erased an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit against Kansas City in an important early-season battle for the AFC West. Bo Nix continued to operate efficiently, throwing for 222 yards and two touchdowns. The defense stepped up when it mattered most, holding the Chiefs scoreless in the fourth quarter and helping Denver complete the comeback. The offense still needs more consistency, but the defense continues to hold up its end of the bargain.

#4 Chicago Bears (+3)

Props to the Bears for going into one of the toughest places to play in the NFL and coming away with a convincing victory in Seattle. Caleb Williams continued doing his thing, throwing for 247 yards and a touchdown without committing a turnover. D’Andre Swift rushed for 69 yards and three touchdowns to help Chicago take down the Seahawks. Jeffery Simmons also starred in his primetime debut with six tackles, a sack, and two tackles for loss, immediately making an impact following the blockbuster trade. Next up are the Buccaneers on Sunday Night Football.

#5 New England Patriots (+3)

The Patriots faced a tougher-than-their-record-suggests Dolphins team in Miami and escaped with a comeback victory. Drake Maye accounted for three total touchdowns, throwing two touchdown passes and rushing for another. New England trailed 13-3 at halftime, but the offense found its rhythm in the second half, putting together three consecutive touchdown drives. The Patriots are showing plenty of promise, but they’ll need to become more consistent if they want to return to the level of success they enjoyed last season.

#6 Jacksonville Jaguars (+4)

The Jaguars dominated the struggling Colts in Duval County, extending their home winning streak against Indianapolis to 12 consecutive seasons. Trevor Lawrence barely needed to throw, completing 10 of 14 passes for 210 yards and three touchdowns. Bhayshul Tuten also had an outstanding afternoon, finishing with 159 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns. The defense capitalized on Daniel Jones’ struggles, forcing three turnovers, including two interceptions and a fumble on a botched trick play by Indianapolis. Next up is a Thursday night matchup against the Ravens.

#7 Seattle Seahawks (-3)

Seattle lost a crucial NFC matchup to the Bears at home, dropping to 4-4 on the season. Jaxon Smith-Njigba continued to impress with 118 receiving yards and a touchdown, but the Seahawks need another receiver to consistently step up for Sam Darnold, who managed just 188 passing yards. Seattle’s running game was also held to only 81 yards. After cutting the deficit to three points in the fourth quarter, the Seahawks couldn’t keep Chicago from pulling away. A costly Darnold interception helped set up another Bears touchdown. Next up are the Cardinals at home.

#8 Kansas City Chiefs (-2)

The Chiefs jumped out to a 24-13 lead early in the fourth quarter but couldn’t hold on against Denver’s defense. A crucial missed 54-yard field goal by Harrison Butker also proved costly. Patrick Mahomes had a much better performance after being shut down by Seattle the previous week, while the Chiefs’ offense found success with several explosive plays. Kenneth Walker was held to 84 scrimmage yards, and Kansas City couldn’t get the job done when it mattered most. The Chiefs now face an easier test against the Jets on Sunday.

#9 Minnesota Vikings (-6)

The Vikings lost to the Lions, ending their undefeated start to the season. The defense continued to impress, but the offense once again held the team back. The offensive line struggled against Detroit’s pass rush, and Kyler Murray continued to miss some opportunities downfield. Murray finished with 210 passing yards, but the Vikings managed only 266 total yards and struggled to sustain drives. The offense needs to find its rhythm, and quickly. Next up is a difficult Monday Night Football matchup against Buffalo.

#10 Cincinnati Bengals (-1)

The Bengals faced a surprising test against the Titans but ultimately came out on top in an overtime thriller. Joe Burrow accounted for six touchdowns, throwing for five and rushing for another, while Tee Higgins recorded 155 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Ja’Marr Chase added 141 receiving yards and another touchdown. Burrow also threw three costly interceptions that nearly derailed the victory. The Bengals’ defense stepped up when needed, but allowing 36 points to one of the league’s struggling offenses remains a major concern. Next up is an international matchup against the Falcons in Madrid.

#11 Detroit Lions (0)

The Lions came away with an important NFC North victory against the Vikings, led by Jahmyr Gibbs’ outstanding performance. Gibbs rushed for 153 yards and a touchdown, while Jared Goff threw for 176 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Detroit’s defense stepped up against a struggling Minnesota offense, forcing a turnover and generating consistent pressure. It wasn’t a perfect performance, but the Lions did enough to secure a crucial divisional win. Next up is a matchup against the Dolphins in Miami.

#12 Pittsburgh Steelers (0)

The Steelers got their revenge against the Browns with a dominant 27-6 victory. Pittsburgh’s running game took over, finishing with 200 rushing yards behind Jaylen Warren’s 143 yards and a touchdown, along with a rushing touchdown from Rico Dowdle. Aaron Rodgers was held in check, throwing for just 172 yards and an interception, but the running game more than made up for it. The defense also starred with eight sacks and two forced fumbles. Pittsburgh heads into its bye week riding high and sitting atop the AFC North.

#13 Los Angeles Rams (+2)

The Rams dominated the Chargers in the Battle of Los Angeles, relying on their running game to pull away in the second half. Blake Corum and Kyren Williams combined for 129 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Matthew Stafford had a somewhat inconsistent performance, throwing for 157 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. The Rams’ defense also intercepted Justin Herbert twice and consistently pressured him throughout the game. Los Angeles has now won two straight and sits at .500. Next up is a cross-country trip to face the Commanders.

#14 Green Bay Packers (+2)

Green Bay jumped out to a 27-13 lead against Carolina and did just enough defensively to hold on for a 27-19 victory. Jordan Love had an excellent performance, throwing for 288 yards and three touchdowns, although he did throw an interception. Josh Jacobs struggled on the ground, managing just 39 rushing yards, but the passing game made up for it. The Packers’ defense also came through with six sacks and an interception against Bryce Young. Green Bay now sits at 5-3 and faces the Patriots next.

#15 Cleveland Browns (-2)

The Browns’ offense was completely overwhelmed by the Steelers’ defense, surrendering eight sacks and two lost fumbles in the 27-6 loss. Deshaun Watson threw for 324 yards, but the offense couldn’t translate that production into points. Cleveland was held scoreless in the second half and struggled to establish any consistency on the ground. The Browns’ defense also had difficulty stopping Pittsburgh’s rushing attack, allowing 200 yards on the ground. Next up is a road matchup against the Saints.

#16 New York Giants (+2)

The Giants head into Week 9 coming off their bye at 4-2-1. They’ll travel to Philadelphia to face a depleted Eagles team that continues to struggle with injuries and inconsistent play. This is a good opportunity for New York to strengthen its position in the NFC East and continue building momentum after a surprising start to the season.

#17 Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+5)

The Bucs managed to win one of the strangest games of the season, shutting out the Falcons 16-0 in a torrential downpour. Baker Mayfield somehow didn’t complete a single pass, going 0-for-3, but it was the Bucky Irving show in Tampa. Irving rushed for 170 yards and a touchdown, while Kenneth Gainwell added another 140 rushing yards. The Bucs’ defense also came up huge, forcing four interceptions from Michael Penix Jr. and keeping Atlanta off the scoreboard. It was an impressive, albeit unconventional, home victory. Next up are the Bears on Sunday Night Football.

#18 Carolina Panthers (-4)

The Panthers’ offense was held in check by a tough Packers defense on Thursday night. Carolina struggled for much of the game, and although the offense managed to make things interesting in the fourth quarter, it was too little, too late. Bryce Young threw for 209 yards, a touchdown, and an interception while being sacked six times. The Panthers also struggled to establish consistency on the ground. Carolina remains competitive, but performances like this show just how much work remains.

#19 Houston Texans (+2)

The Texans come off their bye week at 2-5, with four of their losses coming in one-possession games. Houston desperately needs to find some consistency on both sides of the ball if it wants to make a push in the AFC South. Next up is a matchup against the struggling, winless Chargers at home. This is a game the Texans need to take advantage of.

#20 New Orleans Saints (+3)

The Saints also come off their bye week at 2-5, with three of their losses coming by one possession. New Orleans has shown flashes of being competitive but hasn’t been able to finish enough games. Next up is a tough home matchup against the Browns, who will be looking to bounce back after their loss to Pittsburgh.

#21 Atlanta Falcons (-2)

Atlanta lost an ugly, messy game in a torrential downpour in Tampa Bay. Michael Penix Jr. threw four interceptions, completely derailing the Falcons’ offensive efforts. While Tampa Bay didn’t complete a single pass, Bucky Irving gashed Atlanta’s defense for 170 rushing yards and a touchdown. The Falcons’ defense couldn’t get off the field, and the offense gave away far too many opportunities. Next up is an international matchup against the Bengals in Madrid.

#22 Baltimore Ravens (-5)

The Ravens headed to Buffalo with Lamar Jackson finally back in the lineup, but his return lasted just one play before a thumb injury forced him out. Backup Tyler Huntley also suffered an injury early in the second quarter, paving the way for third-string rookie quarterback Joe Fagnano to take over. Baltimore’s offense never recovered, finishing with just 144 net yards and one touchdown. Derrick Henry was held to 53 rushing yards, and the receiving corps struggled to get anything going. With the offense unable to sustain drives, the defense spent far too much time on the field and eventually wore down against Buffalo. This is a concerning situation for Baltimore, especially with Jackson’s injury potentially sidelining him for an extended period.

#23 Las Vegas Raiders (+1)

The Raiders won a high-scoring, back-and-forth game against the Jets in comeback fashion, led by Kirk Cousins’ 247 passing yards and three touchdowns. Mike Washington Jr. also stepped up with 83 rushing yards, while Brock Bowers powered through with 92 receiving yards and two touchdowns. The Raiders trailed by nine points at halftime and again in the third quarter but took control late in the game. While the defense gave up 33 points and 439 total yards, the offense did enough to pull out the victory. It was a much-needed win after four consecutive losses.

#24 Dallas Cowboys (-4)

A 17-3 Dallas lead late in the third quarter completely disappeared after Gardner Minshew entered the game and led an incredible Cardinals comeback. Minshew threw for 188 yards and three touchdowns, while Tyler Allgeier gashed the Cowboys’ defense for 147 rushing yards and a touchdown, along with a receiving touchdown. Dallas struggled to finish drives in the second half, settling for field goals while Arizona found the end zone. After allowing the Cardinals to tie the game and force overtime, Dallas couldn’t get anything going offensively. Arizona eventually escaped with a 33-30 victory on a field goal in overtime. This was an unbelievable collapse and a complete shock for Jerry Jones and the Cowboys. Next up is a get-right game against the Colts.

#25 Arizona Cardinals (+1)

Arizona trailed 17-3 late in the third quarter before benching Jacoby Brissett in favor of Gardner Minshew. Cardinals fans got their first glimpse of “Minshew Mania,” and he delivered. Minshew led an incredible comeback, throwing for 188 yards and three touchdowns. Tyler Allgeier also played a massive role, rushing for 147 yards and a touchdown while adding a receiving touchdown. Arizona scored 23 unanswered points to take control of the game and eventually force overtime. After both teams failed to score on their first overtime possessions, Arizona put together a 44-yard scoring drive to set up the game-winning field goal. What a remarkable comeback victory for the Cardinals.

#26 Washington Commanders (+2)

The Commanders dominated the depleted Eagles 27-10 at home on Sunday Night Football. Jayden Daniels threw for 217 yards and a touchdown, while Washington’s defense held Philadelphia scoreless after the first quarter. The Commanders also received a strong performance from their special teams, with Drew Stevens converting four field goals. Washington desperately needed this win, and it was a good opportunity to get back on track against a struggling divisional opponent. Next up, they face the Rams at home.

#27 Philadelphia Eagles (-2)

The Eagles lost after being held in check by the Commanders. After scoring 10 points in the first quarter, Philadelphia remained scoreless for the rest of the contest. Tanner McKee threw for 212 yards and an interception, while the running game was held to just 91 yards. The defense also struggled to contain Washington’s offense and surrendered five sacks. Injuries continue to plague this team, and the situation is becoming increasingly concerning. Next up is an important NFC East divisional matchup against the Giants.

#28 Miami Dolphins (-1)

Miami led 13-3 at halftime against the Patriots but was held in check offensively for much of the second half. New England responded with three consecutive touchdown drives to take control of the game. Malik Willis threw for 211 yards and two touchdowns, but also had an interception, while the rushing attack struggled to get going. The Dolphins are a gritty team, and I’ve consistently been impressed with their effort throughout the season. Yes, they lost, but they fought hard once again. They just need to find a way to finish games.

#29 Tennessee Titans (0)

The Titans played a surprisingly competitive game against the Bengals, ultimately losing 43-36 in overtime. Tony Pollard rushed for 117 yards and two touchdowns, while Cam Ward arguably had the best game of his young career, throwing for 304 yards and two touchdowns. The Titans’ defense also forced three interceptions from Joe Burrow and recovered a Chase Brown fumble. However, Cincinnati’s offense eventually found its rhythm, and Tennessee couldn’t get the necessary stops to close out the game. The Titans fall to 1-7 heading into their bye week, but there were some encouraging signs offensively.

#30 New York Jets (+1)

Yes, the Jets move up despite losing to the Raiders, largely because of how competitive they were throughout the game. Geno Smith threw for 290 yards and two touchdowns, although he also threw an interception. Braelon Allen rushed for 147 yards and a touchdown, while Adonai Mitchell caught seven passes for 142 yards and a touchdown. Unfortunately, New York surrendered two nine-point leads and managed only a field goal in the fourth quarter while the Raiders scored 10 points to pull ahead. The Jets showed some offensive promise, but their inability to finish games continues to be a major problem. Next up is a tougher matchup against the Chiefs.

#31 Indianapolis Colts (-1)

The Colts were humiliated in Jacksonville, extending their losing streak in Duval to 12 consecutive seasons. Daniel Jones struggled mightily, throwing for just 144 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions, including a pick-six. One of the game’s most bizarre moments came on a trick play involving Jonathan Taylor, who fumbled the ball and gave Jacksonville another opportunity to capitalize. The Colts’ defense also struggled, allowing Trevor Lawrence to throw three touchdown passes and Bhayshul Tuten to produce 159 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns. Indianapolis looks like a team without an identity, and after the latest roster moves, it appears the rebuild is officially underway.

#32 Los Angeles Chargers (0)

The Chargers lost again against the Rams following another poor outing from Justin Herbert, who threw two interceptions. The rushing attack also struggled to get anything going, while the defense was eventually worn down by the Rams’ ground game. Blake Corum and Kyren Williams combined for 129 rushing yards and two touchdowns. The Chargers are in serious trouble at 0-7 and face plenty of questions surrounding their roster and coaching staff. Next up is a road trip to Houston to face the Texans.
