NFL Power Rankings: Week 8

NFL Power Rankings: Week 8

Week 7 brought some major surprises, from the 49ers suffering their first loss to Seattle dominating Kansas City. Several teams made strong statements, while others continued to struggle with injuries, turnovers, and inconsistent play. With the season approaching the halfway point, these rankings reflect current performance, momentum, and what I expect from each team moving forward.

1 San Francisco 49ers

The Niners lost in Atlanta due to major turnover issues. Injuries have once again caught up with San Francisco, and its bye week comes at the right time. The Niners jumped out to a 14-3 lead early in the second quarter but managed only one more touchdown the rest of the game. Brock Purdy threw two costly interceptions, and George Kittle fumbled on the final drive, effectively ending their comeback hopes. Their wide receiver room is also decimated, along with several key defenders. The Niners remain at #1 because of their excellent play in their first six wins. Top teams respond to adversity, and I expect San Francisco to do so in Week 9 after their bye week.

2 Buffalo Bills

The Bills are coming off their bye week at 5-1, and a tough test awaits them against the Ravens, with Lamar Jackson expected to return. How will Buffalo handle the challenge defensively? The offense should remain productive, but the defense will need to step up against a potentially dangerous Baltimore offense.

3 Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings’ defense starred against the Colts, sacking Daniel Jones four times, holding him to 108 passing yards, and intercepting him on the final drive to seal the win. The offense, on the other hand, still looks rusty. Kyler Murray made some impressive throws but also missed some easy ones. The Vikings’ real test comes with the Lions, Bills, Packers, and 49ers in that order. The defense has been the star of the team, but the offense needs to find more consistency.

4 Seattle Seahawks

Seattle had some rocky offensive performances earlier in the season, but the Seahawks seemingly fixed some of those issues against Kansas City. The running game finally got going, taking some of the pressure off Sam Darnold. Jaxon Smith-Njigba starred as usual, recording nine catches for 150 yards and a touchdown. The defense held the Chiefs to just three points and prevented them from reaching the red zone. Seattle also held Kenneth Walker to just 36 rushing yards. This was truly outstanding work by the Seahawks.

5 Denver Broncos

The Broncos’ offense was finally somewhat efficient, with Bo Nix throwing for 222 yards and a touchdown while adding 73 rushing yards and another score. The defense also held up its end of the bargain against Arizona, but the 11 penalties need to be addressed. Next up is a rematch of their Week 1 matchup against the Chiefs.

6 Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs went into Seattle and were flat-out dominated. Injuries to their wide receivers have hampered the offense, and the running game couldn’t get much going. I’m not concerned about Kansas City just yet; the Chiefs are still a force to be reckoned with. However, if the running game remains ineffective and the receivers can’t provide support, they could be in trouble. The defense did what it could, but it wasn’t enough. Next up is an important AFC West matchup against Denver.

7 Chicago Bears

Caleb Williams has returned with a vengeance. He made some absolutely absurd clutch throws that helped the Bears beat the Patriots. Williams threw for 308 yards and two touchdowns against a gritty New England defense. The Bears’ defense also played well, aside from giving up a long screen touchdown to Rhamondre Stevenson. Luther Burden also caught four passes for 130 yards and a touchdown. On top of all that, the Bears landed Jeffery Simmons to strengthen their defensive front. Next up is a tough matchup against the Seahawks on Monday.

8 New England Patriots

The Patriots traveled to Chicago and lost a close contest to the Bears. The defense gave up a ton of yards, while the offense started slowly outside of a late screen touchdown to end the first half. Drake Maye threw for 321 yards and two touchdowns but also threw a costly interception in the red zone. The Patriots’ rushing attack wasn’t effective, managing only 70 rushing yards. New England will look to bounce back against the Dolphins.

9 Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals started slowly, trailing 13-0 at halftime, but exploded in the second half with five consecutive touchdown drives to dominate Baltimore. Joe Burrow passed for 292 yards and four touchdowns, while Tee Higgins caught six passes for 148 yards and a touchdown. Chase Brown was once again held in check offensively. The Bengals also recorded four sacks and an interception in the second half. This was an impressive turnaround for a team that desperately needed a strong performance.

10 Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jaguars are coming off their bye week following their Week 6 loss to Houston in London. They now face a struggling Colts team. Jacksonville’s defense should have opportunities to take advantage of Indianapolis’ offensive struggles, while the Jaguars’ offense needs to capitalize against a vulnerable defense. This is a game Jacksonville should be looking to win.

11 Detroit Lions

The Lions won a tightly contested matchup against the Packers, but after a solid offensive start, they struggled to finish drives. Going for it on fourth down in their own territory and some questionable decisions by Jared Goff in the fourth quarter nearly cost them the game. Despite those issues, Goff’s connection with Amon-Ra St. Brown, who had nine catches for 153 yards, and Jameson Williams, who had five catches for 91 yards and two touchdowns, was on full display. Jahmyr Gibbs also had a strong game on the ground. Detroit’s defense remained solid throughout the contest.

12 Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers played a balanced game against the Saints in Paris. Aaron Rodgers threw for 212 yards and a touchdown, while Jaylen Warren rushed for 101 yards. Pittsburgh’s defense also dominated New Orleans’ rushing attack, allowing just 18 rushing yards, while keeping Tyler Shough under control. Next up is a divisional rematch against the Browns at home.

13 Cleveland Browns

The Browns once again won a one-possession game, this time in Nashville. After a sluggish offensive start, Cleveland found its footing behind Quinshon Judkins, who rushed for 96 yards and two touchdowns. Deshaun Watson threw for 308 yards despite an early interception. The Browns allowed Tony Pollard to rush for 129 yards and three touchdowns, but they managed to contain Cam Ward enough to secure a 27-24 win with a late field goal. Next up is an important AFC North matchup against the Steelers.

14 Carolina Panthers

The Panthers entered their matchup with Tampa Bay riding high but were absolutely dominated in Baker Mayfield’s return. Although Mayfield didn’t do much statistically, the Buccaneers’ rushing attack took over. Bucky Irving rushed for 106 yards and two touchdowns, and Tampa Bay finished with a whopping 258 rushing yards. Bryce Young threw for 163 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Carolina’s rushing offense was also held in check by the Buccaneers’ defensive front. I may have been wrong about the Panthers, who are now 3-3 and face a crucial NFC matchup against the Packers tonight.

15 Los Angeles Rams

The Rams followed up last week’s upset loss with a much-needed win against the Raiders. Los Angeles started extremely hot on both sides of the ball, jumping out to a 28-6 halftime lead. However, the Rams fell flat in the second half and allowed Las Vegas to make things interesting before ultimately doing enough to win. Matthew Stafford threw for 195 yards and three touchdowns, while Kyren Williams and Blake Corum each rushed for more than 90 yards and a touchdown. You could argue that the Raiders’ late scoring made the final margin look closer than the game initially appeared. Next up is an all-Los Angeles matchup against the winless Chargers.

16 Green Bay Packers

Green Bay was on the wrong end of several questionable officiating decisions, but the Packers also got in their own way. Rookie kicker Trey Smack missed two field goals, including a 35-yard attempt late in the fourth quarter that could have given Green Bay the lead. Jordan Love threw two touchdown passes but also had an ugly interception in the fourth quarter. Josh Jacobs struggled on the ground in his return, rushing for 36 yards, although he caught five passes for 55 yards and a touchdown. You can blame the officiating for some of the frustration, but the Packers missed several opportunities to win this game. Next up is an important NFC matchup against the Panthers tonight.

17 Baltimore Ravens

Baltimore jumped out to a 13-0 halftime lead but was absolutely obliterated by Cincinnati in the second half, allowing five consecutive touchdown drives. Tyler Huntley and Zay Flowers started hot but couldn’t maintain that momentum after halftime. Derrick Henry was also held in check. The Ravens desperately need Lamar Jackson back, and his anticipated return against Buffalo on Sunday couldn’t come at a better time. This is a crucial matchup for Baltimore as it looks to get back on track.

18 New York Giants

J.J. McCarthy’s first start with the Giants went better than anyone could have anticipated. Although he didn’t throw a touchdown, he passed for 252 yards and showed a strong connection with Malik Nabers, who had seven catches for 111 yards. The star of the Giants’ offense was the rushing attack, led by Cam Skattebo, who rushed for 124 yards and a touchdown. Devin Singletary and Tyrone Tracy also contributed rushing touchdowns as New York totaled 188 rushing yards. The Giants head into their bye week in first place in the NFC East. This was a huge win for a team that continues to exceed expectations.

19 Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons put together a great game plan against the previously undefeated 49ers at home. Michael Penix Jr. threw for 213 yards and three touchdowns, while the defense forced four turnovers against San Francisco. Bijan Robinson was held to 63 rushing yards, but Penix and the defense did enough to secure the win. Atlanta showed that it can compete with the league’s best teams. Next up is an important NFC South matchup against the Buccaneers.

20 Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys played a strong game against the Eagles, although Philadelphia was dealing with significant injuries and starting backup quarterback Tanner McKee. Dak Prescott threw for 212 yards and three touchdowns, while Javonte Williams rushed for 155 yards and a touchdown. CeeDee Lamb also caught five passes for 74 yards and two touchdowns. Dallas’ defense played well enough to secure the victory, and the offense took advantage of Philadelphia’s depleted roster. Next up is a home matchup against the Arizona Cardinals.

21 Houston Texans

Houston played another back-and-forth game, this time against the Giants at home, but couldn’t get over the hump in a costly 27-21 overtime loss. C.J. Stroud threw for 153 yards and two touchdowns, while the Texans’ running game struggled to get going. Houston’s defense was also surprisingly ineffective, allowing 188 rushing yards and 252 passing yards to J.J. McCarthy. Heading into the bye week at 2-5 is not what Texans fans expected, and the team has a lot of ground to make up in the AFC South.

22 Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Tampa Bay went into Carolina and dominated from start to finish. Baker Mayfield’s return didn’t produce much through the air, but it didn’t need to. The Buccaneers rushed for 258 yards behind Bucky Irving, who had 106 yards and a touchdown, Kenneth Gainwell, who added 88 rushing yards, and Sean Tucker, who contributed 52 rushing yards and a touchdown. It was a good game for Mayfield to return to, as he completed seven of 11 passes for 64 yards. Next up is a home matchup against the Falcons.

23 New Orleans Saints

The Saints lost to the Steelers in Paris and struggled to get anything going offensively. They managed just 18 rushing yards for the entire game, while Tyler Shough did what he could to keep the offense moving. Shough has been an impressive bright spot for New Orleans this season, but he didn’t get enough support to pull out the win. The Saints’ defense held Pittsburgh to 16 points, but the offense couldn’t capitalize on its opportunities. New Orleans now heads into its bye week.

24 Las Vegas Raiders

After starting the season 3-0, the Raiders have now lost four straight games, including their latest defeat against the Rams. The offense started horribly, and the defense was gashed as Las Vegas trailed 28-6 at halftime. Although the Raiders scored 15 points in the second half and Kirk Cousins found his rhythm, it was too late to complete the comeback. The Raiders’ rushing attack has to be a concern at this point, with Ashton Jeanty struggling to make an impact. Las Vegas has plenty of issues to figure out before it can turn its season around.

25 Philadelphia Eagles

Philadelphia lost at home to Dallas on Monday night, and the injuries continue to pile up. The Eagles were already dealing with a depleted roster, and Tanner McKee struggled to provide the spark they needed. Saquon Barkley also appeared to aggravate his injury, while Dameon Pierce was placed on injured reserve following the game. Philadelphia was gashed through the air by Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb and on the ground by Javonte Williams. With so much of the offense dealing with injuries, this could quickly become a lost season in Philadelphia if the team can’t get healthy.

26 Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals lost at home to Denver in a game where the offense couldn’t do enough to keep pace. Jacoby Brissett passed for 272 yards and a touchdown, but the running game struggled against Denver. After a strong defensive showing against the Rams, Arizona came back down to earth, allowing 152 rushing yards and 272 passing yards to Bo Nix, who has struggled at times this season. Arizona was expected to be in a rebuilding year, but the team needs to show more consistency if it wants to remain competitive.

27 Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins finally got their first win of the season against the Jets on the road. The offense showed signs of life, with Malik Willis throwing for 208 yards and two touchdowns while adding a rushing touchdown. Ollie Gordon also rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown. Miami’s defense played well in the first half, and although the Jets attempted a comeback after halftime, they ultimately fell short. Credit to the Dolphins for finally getting into the win column.

28 Washington Commanders

The Commanders come off their bye week with an NFC East matchup against the injury-riddled Eagles on Sunday night. Washington has an opportunity to take advantage of Philadelphia’s depleted roster, but it will need a strong performance on both sides of the ball. The biggest question is whether Jayden Daniels will be healthy enough to play and capitalize on the opportunity.

29 Tennessee Titans

The Titans started the game hot with an opening-drive touchdown, followed by a Deshaun Watson interception that set up another scoring opportunity. After that, however, Tennessee struggled to maintain its momentum as Cleveland came back from a 14-point deficit. Tony Pollard played incredibly well, rushing for 129 yards and three touchdowns, but the Titans couldn’t stop Quinshon Judkins, who scored twice on the ground, or KC Concepcion, who had 129 receiving yards. Cam Ward also struggled to make a significant impact, but Tennessee remained competitive throughout the game.

30 Indianapolis Colts

The Colts left Minnesota with another heartbreaking loss, as their offense struggled to find consistency. Daniel Jones’ poor play continued, as he threw for just 108 yards and an ugly interception on the final drive. Jonathan Taylor played well again, rushing for 95 yards and an early touchdown, but Jones struggled to handle the Vikings’ blitzes. The Colts’ defense played decently but gave up a fourth-quarter touchdown drive that sealed their fate. Spencer Shrader also missed two key field goals that hurt Indianapolis. Following the loss, the Colts traded franchise icons, Quenton Nelson and DeForest Buckner. It appears that a rebuild may be underway in Indianapolis.

31 New York Jets

The Jets lost at home to the previously winless Dolphins. New York’s defense was exposed through the air and on the ground, as Malik Willis threw for 208 yards and two touchdowns while adding a rushing touchdown. Ollie Gordon also rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown. The Jets’ offense attempted a late comeback after a sluggish first half that left Garrett Wilson frustrated. Geno Smith threw for 287 yards and three touchdowns but also tossed an interception, while Braelon Allen rushed for 104 yards. Rookie Omar Cooper continued his impressive season with another 100-yard receiving performance and a touchdown. The Jets’ defense continues to disappoint, and next up is a home matchup against a struggling Raiders team.

32 Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers come off their bye week at 0-6, hoping to turn things around and make some noise. However, they have a tough task ahead against their fellow Los Angeles team, the Rams. The Chargers need to find a way to get their offense going and put together a complete performance if they hope to earn their first win of the season.
