The San Antonio Brahmas are gearing up for an exciting inaugural season in the United Football League (UFL). As they prepare to kick off their campaign, the team has announced the last round of roster moves and have established their final 50 personnel squad. Let’s dive into the details:
Thinning the Herd
When faced with forage shortages, cattle operations often find themselves without enough feed to sustain their current herd size. Thinning the herd becomes essential to manage available resources effectively. Resilient operations have well-defined culling strategies, and much like this real-world scenario, the UFL and the San Antonio Brahmas were in the same situation. The Brahmas herd was large and there were not enough spots to go around. As painful as it is, culling the herd was necessary and the Head Rancher, Coach Wade Phillips and his trusted assistant ranchers were left with making the difficult choice.
On March 22, 2024, the Brahmas took the last steps to bring their roster to the league-allowed limit of 50 players for the season. Here are the players who have been placed on waivers:
Kelechi Anyalebechi (Inside Linebacker) – Incarnate Word.
Terrance Lang (Defensive End) – Colorado.
Mark Milton (Cornerback) – Baylor.
Calvin Turner (Wide Receiver) – Hawaii.
Jordan Veasy (Wide Receiver) – California.
Jarrid Williams (Tackle) – Miami (FL).
Initial Thoughts
The one player that sticks out the most is Kelechi Anyalebechi. Anyalebechi is from the Incarnate Word, a local San Antonio school, and it would have been special to see local talent playing at a high level here in San Antonio. With Anyalebechi’s departue, that leaves Corey Mayfield (UTSA) as the sole player that played for a local school.
Looking Ahead
The Brahmas’ season opener is set to take place at home in the Alamodome, where they’ll face off against the D.C. Defenders on Sunday, March 31 at 11 a.m. Fans can secure their tickets for this exciting matchup, as well as explore season ticket options and access the Lone Star Club. Additionally, private suite leases for Brahmas games are available, offering both full-season and single-game options.
Despite the sad loss of our beloved cattle, fans can rest easy knowing that this culling will only make the herd stronger, more resilient and fiercer as they stampede their way through the league and gore all opponents on their way to the first ever UFL championship, the first of many to come our way.
