Game Results
Week 4 of the 2025 UFL season continued, where the Birmingham Stallions (3-1) secured a solid 23-16 win over the Houston Roughnecks (1-3). The Stallions stayed true to their trademark style relying on a tough, disciplined defense, winning time of possession, and executed well on offense. Houston remains winless at home as they roll into the halfway point of the regular season.
The game was highlighted by a standout performance from quarterback Matt Corral, who threw for 195 yards and two touchdowns. He connected with Deon Cain on a 50-yard scoring pass that gave the Stallions the lead. Wide receiver Davion Davis also contributed significantly, catching a 26-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead.
Defensively, the Stallions were solid, limiting the Roughnecks’ offense and making key stops when needed. The Roughnecks’ quarterback managed to rush for an 11-yard touchdown, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Birmingham’s balanced attack.
Another Hit To Houston’s Offense
Roughnecks quarterback Nolan Henderson took a hard hit early in the first quarter that forced him to leave the game with a shoulder injury. The hit came on a scramble play, where Henderson was brought down awkwardly by a Birmingham defender. He stayed down briefly before walking off under his own power. It was clear he was in discomfort and did not return. The injury was a tough blow for the Roughnecks, who had hoped Henderson could provide stability and rhythm to the offense. His early exit forced Houston to turn to backup Jalan McClendon much sooner than expected.
McClendon’s Success
In his 2025 UFL debut, Jalan McClendon made a strong impression. He showed his resilience and play-making ability that kept the Roughnecks in the game until the final whistle.
McClendon showcased his dual-threat ability throughout the contest, extending plays with his legs and making clutch throws under pressure. His most electric moment came in the third quarter. The Roughnecks QB scrambled out of the pocket and threw up a 46-yard bomb to (WR) T.J. Vasher, resulting in a next play touchdown.
McClendon faced plenty of pressure but remained composed, completing several key passes on third down to sustain drives and keep the game competitive. He finished the day with a solid all-around performance, tallying 236 passing yards. Houston may have fallen to 1-3 on the season, but McClendon’s outing was a bright spot. It suggested he could be the catalyst the Roughnecks need to turn their season around.
To Start or Not To Start
Based on Jalan McClendon’s recent performance, there’s a strong case to be made for giving him the starting nod. If he continues to show this kind of poise and production, especially this week against the Brahmas’ defense, it would be hard not to ride the hot hand. Ultimately, the decision should balance short-term momentum with long-term upside, but McClendon’s case should get stronger with every snap.
Why Houston Has Hope
The Houston Roughnecks and their fans have reason to stay optimistic thanks to Jalan McClendon’s performance. Thrust into action after Nolan Henderson’s early exit, McClendon displayed poise, athleticism, and a clear command of the offense. He energized the team with an impressive 11-yard rushing touchdown. While consistently extended plays with his legs, giving Houston a fighting chance against the defending champs. His ability to move the chains and keep the Stallions’ defense on its heels showed real promise. For a backup quarterback to step in mid-game and keep things competitive against one of the league’s best teams is no small feat. If McClendon continues to build on this momentum, the Roughnecks may have found a spark that could turn their season around.
Defense Still Searching for Identity
While the offense showed flashes of potential, the Roughnecks’ defense continues to struggle with consistency. They gave up multiple chunk plays through the air, including a 50-yard touchdown that proved pivotal in shifting momentum. Missed tackles and blown coverages were recurring issues. Also failing to generate much pressure on Matt Corral throughout the game. The defense has yet to deliver a full four-quarter performance this season, often faltering in key moments. For Houston to make a legitimate push in the second half of the season, the defense will need to tighten up and start creating more impact plays — sacks, turnovers, and third-down stops — to support their evolving offense.
