The Michigan Panthers earned a 30–18 win over the Houston Roughnecks at TDECU Stadium on Saturday. With Bryce Perkins ruled out just before kickoff, Danny Etling got the start and responded with his best performance of the season.

The win improved Michigan to 6–2 and secured a playoff berth. With Ford Field unavailable in June, the Panthers will now travel to Birmingham for the USFL Conference Championship—regardless of seeding.
A Slow Start, Then a Spark
Michigan’s opening drive stalled after a sack and a couple of missed connections. Houston took advantage of the early stop, as Zaquandre White broke off a 45-yard run to set up a field goal and a 3–0 lead.

Momentum shifted quickly on the next drive. A quick 34-yard pass to Gunner Oakes moved the chains and flipped the field. From there, the Panthers leaned on scrambles from Etling and inside runs by Taua and McCrary. The drive was capped by a five-yard touchdown to Malik Turner. Cole Hikutini caught the one-point conversion, putting Michigan up 7–3.
A halted Houston drive gave way to a big special teams moment. Xavier Malone returned the punt to the Houston one-yard line. Etling found Samson Nacua on the next snap for a walk in score. Taua powered in the conversion, extending the lead to 14–3.

Houston answered with a decisive touchdown from Jalen McClendon to Keke Chism, though the one-point attempt was intercepted by KiAnte Hardin. A 51-yard field goal later in the quarter made it 14–12. Michigans final drive before half wen 48 yards on 7 plays to set up a failed field-goal attempt by Potter ans the score remained 14-12 at the half.
Defensive Stops Fuel Second-Half Surge
Houston opened the second half by driving to the Michigan 35. The Panthers’ defense held strong. On fourth down, McClendon’s pass to Spivey hit the ground, and the ball was turned over on downs.
Etling and Taua went to work again. The Panthers leaned on the run and moved methodically. The drive ended with a 35-yard touchdown to Devon Ross, who got free down the sideline. Taua punched in another one-point try to make it 21–12.

Then came the backbreaker. Keni-H Lovely jumped a route and returned the interception for a touchdown. Etling overthrew the conversion attempt to Hikutini, but the damage was done. The Panthers led 27–12.

Houston strung together another long drive to start the final frame, but it ended in confusion. A fumble recovered and returned by Noah Dawkins was overturned. Still, the next play saw Lorenzo Lingard dropped for a loss on fourth-and-one.
Etling’s Poise and Defense Close It Out
Etling stayed poised throughout the second half. He finished 14-of-22 for 167 yards and three scores, playing clean football and avoiding mistakes earning a 126.3 QBR. Turner hauled in four catches for 40 yards and a score. Ross added two grabs for 39 yards, including his third-quarter touchdown. Nacua had just one catch—but it came from the one-yard line and put points on the board.
Taua carried the ball 12 times for 46 yards. His consistency helped wear down the Roughnecks’ front, especially in the third quarter. Two of Michigan’s one-point conversions came from him.
Defensively, Arnold Tarpley led the unit with 14 total tackles. Kedrick Whitehead added eight more. Michigan allowed over 300 yards passing but kept Houston’s offense out of the end zone when it counted. The pick-six from Lovely was the highlight, but the Panthers also forced turnover on downs, a failed fourth-and-one, and a fumble recovery by Stone Jr.
Houston scored once more with six seconds left, but it was too late. The Panthers sealed it after a failed three-point conversion and a stopped fourth-and-12.
Looking Ahead
Michigan now sits at 6–2 with two games left, one at Birmingham and another against Houston at home to close the regular season. Even if the Panthers finish with the top seed, the conference title game will be hosted at Birmingham due to a scheduling conflict at Ford Field.

Still, what happened in Houston felt like more than just a win. It was a complete performance—built on timely throws, smart decision-making, and physical defense. Bryce Perkins is expected to lead the offense moving forward, but it’s reassuring to know that when called upon, Etling can step in and deliver. If the defense keeps creating turnovers and the offense stays this balanced, Michigan won’t just show up in Birmingham… they’ll be ready to hunt.
